Cardiff is one of the UK’s best boozing cities. It is a place brimming with culture and things to do and most importantly, home to some great pubs. If you’re visiting the Welsh capital to watch a game of football at Cardiff City Stadium, then you won’t be short of options when it comes to choosing a boozer for those pre- and post-game pints.
Cardiff city centre is always a popular option for those travelling by train. The station is situated in the middle of a square mile comprising around 30 public houses, from traditional Welsh pubs to modern beer cafes.
For the purposes of this article though, let’s take a look at the best pubs near the home of the Bluebirds, Cardiff City.
St Canna’s Alehouse
42 Llandaff Rd, Pontcanna, Cardiff, CF11 9NJ
A personal favourite of Pintopedia’s, St Canna’s Alehouse is a lively and friendly pub about a 15 minute walk from Cardiff City Stadium. While it is a micropub with a limited range of beers, it often boasts some of the nicest craft beers and real ales available in Cardiff. Despite being a micropub, there is ample seating both indoors and out, and there is often entertainment in the form of live music. If you are a beer lover and want to taste a local tipple, then this ale house is a must-visit.
The Lansdowne
71 Beda Rd, Cardiff, CF5 1LX
Slightly closer to the stadium is The Lansdowne, a traditional award-winning pub which serves up real ales, craft beers, and classic pub grub. It won CAMRA Pub of the Year not just once, not just twice, but three times in 2014, 2015, and 2019. It stocks both local and international beers alike and is welcoming to all, including Cardiff City and travelling supporters.
The Grange
134 Penarth Rd, Cardiff CF11 6NJ
The Grange is another solid option as highlighted by being CAMRA Cardiff Pub of the Year 2018. The laid-back bar offers a range of lagers, craft beers, real ales, and, yes you guessed it, traditional pub grub. In the summer, there is live music in the beer garden which you can enjoy with a homemade stone-baked pizza fresh from the beer garden’s pizza oven.
The Cornwall
Cornwall St, Cardiff, CF11 6SQ
The Cornwall is a fan favourite for Cardiff City supporters. Just a 15 minute stroll away from the stadium, the pub offers a good selection of drinks and basic hot food. There’s also multiple TV screens dotted about showing live sport, so you don’t have to miss any of the action from the early or late kick-offs.
The Ivor Davies
245-249 Cowbridge Rd E, Cardiff, CF11 9AN
Last on our list is The Ivor Davies, serving a range of beers and offering plenty of space both inside and outdoors. This Wetherspoons, named after the actor, songwriter and composer Ivor Novello (born Ivor Davies), hits all the right notes. All-day grub, lagers, craft beer, real ale, wine, spirits, and more. As we always say on Pintopedia, you know what you’re going to get when it comes to a Spoons!
